The main character of Paul Muldoon's long poem Madoc: A Mystery. The name also refers to the romantic poet Southey, who aimed to set up a utopian society. Like many of Muldoon's characters, South is both the perpetrator and victim of violence at once, reflecting the complex histories of colonization.
