This series starts with Scythe (2016), about a future world where a benevolent AI called Thunderhead coordinates society with no human government, and death has been eliminated. To keep the human race from growing too large for the Earth to support, some people are appointed "scythes" and are tasked with taking lives. Unlike everybody else, the Thunderhead has no control over them. The first book follows two teenagers who are apprenticed as Scythes, and begins to unravel the corruption that has grown among some scythes who kill for pleasure and for power. In Thunderhead (2018) we learn more about the AI, and in Toll (2019) we see how the teens work alongside the Thunderhead to overthrow the corruption.
And the pain . . . the pain of my awareness is unbearable. Because my eyes do not close. Ever. And so all I can do is watch unblinkingly as my beloved humankind slowly weaves the rope it will use to hang itself.
