In the near future of this novel, the internet has been permanently destroyed by cyberterrorists, and civilization has crumbled. The narrative alternates between "Before", where we read about a time with just slightly more surveillance and tracking than today, and about an autonomous zone in Bristol where there is no internet, and "After", when city infrastructure and trade are in ruins.Â
